Job Hunting During The Holidays
Interview
with Tony Lee, Publisher Of Careerjournal.com |
Mike
Carruthers:
There's a belief by many people that the holiday season is
a lousy time to look for a new job, but maybe not.
Tony Lee:
I think it's old news; the end of the year is a wonderful time
for doing the most effective job search strategy, which is networking.
Tony Lee, Publisher
of Careerjournal.com…
It's a perfect
time to pick up the phone and call people you hadn't spoken
to in a little while, just to catch up. And if you've prepared
kind of a 30 or 40 second overview of your situation (what you're
looking for) it's a great way to start spreading the word that
you're looking for a new opportunity.
In fact this
time of year has a lot going for it in terms of job hunting.
First is that
many departments having budgets that have been approved for
hiring throughout the year that have not been filled. And the
managers know that if they don't hire the position by the end
of the year they will lose the permission to do that hiring.
Another is that many bosses, so to speak, want to have someone
in and on the ground running by the first of the year.
Also, it's really
a good time to just connect with people.
You can get through
to people easier on the phone because assistants are taking
days off. People have that holiday spirit. Especially in holiday
settings, I mean, if you go to office parties that you're invited
to or even neighborhood cocktail parties, it's a great time
to network. Now remember it's not a great time to ask for a
job. It's better to ask for guidance and help on your job search.
That's the type of request you're making and if you get good
at it you're going to succeed.
