The New Employer/Employee Relationship
Interview
with Stephen Covey, author of the book, The
8th Habit |
Mike
Carruthers:
Back in 1989 Steven Covey wrote a huge best selling book called
The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People. Now he has an 8th habit.
Stephen Covey:
The 8th habit is, "find your voice and inspire others to
find theirs.".
That's Steven
Covey, author of his new book, The
8th Habit.
So, the voice
is a sense of what your passion is, what your talent is, what
your conscience tells you want to do that serves a human need.
And when those four things overlap: passion, talent, conscience
and need, you have found your voice.
Truly great organizations
are helping their employees find their voice and it's paying
off in a big way.
Instead of telling
them what their job description is, you ask them, "What
is it you love doing, you do well?" And then try to marry
that to meet your need. And there are so many illustrations
where this is happening throughout the world. This is why Toyota
is eating Detroit's lunch. This is what Southwest Airlines,
what Dell Computers, what many, many organizations are doing.
This change in
thinking, says Steven, is both fundamental and necessary.
It's a philosophy.
It's a whole different way of thinking about people. And that's
why it's so important with children and with employees to listen
to them more than tell them. And to communicate their worth
and their potential so clearly that they come to see it in themselves.
