27, 2007: Energy Conservation News II Interview
with Brian Keane President of Smart Power www.smartpower.org |
Mike
Carruthers:
Conserving energy is a little trickier than just turning down the thermostat a
few degrees or using fluorescent light bulbs. Listen to this…
Brian Keane: Seventy-five percent of the electricity
used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off.Brian
Keane, President of Smart Power a non-profit
organization that promotes wise and alternative energy use. And
the big culprits are basically computers, cell phones and TV's and DVD's. So,
with your cable TV box you think you turn it off and instead it's still going
on. I suggest you take your TV and your DVD and your cable box and plug them all
into a power strip and when you're done watching TV just turn off that power strip.
You don't have to unplug everything just turn off the power strip that power strip
will actually shut down the power. Most
of us have a microwave oven in the kitchen and here's an interesting fact… Did
you know that with a microwave oven, the most energy a microwave oven uses is
to power the clock, not to actually microwave food? And
Brian says if you want to promote alternative energy use… In
many states you can actually check off a box on your utility bill and sign up
for clean energy. And what that does is it tells the utility, basically you say
to the utility, "Hey when you're buying energy for my house don't buy coal,
don't buy oil, not buy nuclear just buy it from wind, solar or hydro sources"
- and they will. You

Should Know.
