Mike Carruthers:
Particularly at this time of year it’s easy to celebrate the great
things that have occurred in our lives, but it’s also easy to
dwell on the regrets we have. Things like…
Mira
Kirshenbaum:
Why didn’t I have children when I could? Why did I make that
mistake when I was twenty-seven? Why did I stay with someone
who wasn’t right for me?
Mira Kirshenbaum
author of the book, Everything
Happens for a Reason, says, when you find yourself dwelling
on those things, the first thing you have to do is realize there
is nothing you can do about the past.
What
we have to do now is look forward, and say - ok, that happened.
What can I learn from it? What opportunity exists here? What
gift is there? And, something positive always comes out of it.
And, get this, the meaning is always involved in helping you
become your best, most authentic self.
Mira is
the child of holocaust survivors. Every relative except for
her parents were killed by the Nazis in World War II, and she
has long struggled with the question “Why?”
I found
there were two reasons: First, so I could let go of fear. I
shouldn’t have been born, so why should I be afraid of dying?
If I’m not afraid of dying, then why should I be afraid of anything?
And, the other reason was to have a sense of mission. By my
count thirty of my cousins died. Was I spared so I can spend
my life going shopping? I’ve gotten the gift of knowing that
the meaning of my life involves helping people.
