31, 2007: Shortcomings Of The Internet Interview
with Barbara Chernow author of Beyond
The Internet | Mike
Carruthers:
When you want to know something or do some research you likely head to the Internet.
And that's a good place, however…
Barbara Chernow: The Internet is one of many resources you
should consult when looking for information but it is not the only resource. I'd
like to debunk the myth that the Internet is complete.Barbara
Chernow, author of the book Beyond
the Internet says there is so much more to learning and research than the
World Wide Web. For example… Original
documents, genealogical records, onsite visits to places of interest, interviews,
collections in private libraries. Why go to Graceland? Why not just look at pictures
of Graceland on the Internet? Because people want to have that experience of being
on the site. There's something about being in touch with the real world and the
Internet is a virtual reality it's not reality. Perhaps
more importantly, just because something is on the Internet doesn't make it true. You
know if you look my book up on Goggle you will see, in some instances that they've
listed a co-author and there is no co-author. And we've had a terribly difficult
time trying to get that corrected. So I suggest if you're going to use the Internet
for quick research then use sources that are traditional and well respected. In
the world of research, Barbara says… I
think the Internet is - it's sort of the fast food restaurant of research. You
can certainly be satisfied, you can have an inexpensive meal, an acceptable level
of quality - but it's not a dining experience.
