Traveling With Kids
Interview
with Christine Loomis, author of
Simplify Family Travel
Mike
Carruthers:
Vacation travel and children a volatile combination, but there
are ways to make it better.
Christine
Loomis :
In planning a trip involve the kids because when the kids
help plan a vacation they have something invested in it and
they're more likely to be well behaved, not perfect mind you.
Christine
Loomis author of the book, Simplify
Family Travel says keep in mind kids will behave on vacation
the same way they behave at home.
Young kids
are going to fight, siblings fight, you're teenager is probably
not going to get up real early in the morning, so if you plan
real early morning events you are both setting yourself up for
disappointment. You know in terms of the kids fighting in the
back seat my advice is always to give kids their own personal
tape player or radio because even if you can't get physical
space away from each other you can get a little psychological
space.
And one
very important rule when traveling with children...
You should
never walk out your door, get in your car, get them on the airplane
or whatever without a whole bunch of snacks. Because your kids
will get hungry as soon as you don't have them.
And when
traveling with kids, attitude is everything.
You know, things are going to go wrong. Baggage might now show
up, your flight might be delayed. You know, if you have those
expectations, if you're realistic about it, you can turn those
things into an adventure.
